Communities In Schools In the Community!

Communities In Schools decided to create an annual day of giving back to the wonderful community in which we serve. We plan to give back to our neighbors as they give to us! Monday, January 15th started our Annual CIS Day in the Community: A Day of Giving. Each staff member took routes for Meals On Wheels in order to partner up with another great non-profit within our community, The Kitchen. We also went out into the community to give information to other businesses to spread awareness of Communities In Schools and how we have impacted Wichita Falls for the last 11 years. Way to go CIS!

Ms. Harris is Playing Brain Games!

A big shout out to Monique Harris, our Rider High School Site Coordinator, for inviting and collaborating with North Texas Area United Way’s Brain Game Challenge! Mrs. Harris invited Trish Dillmon and Beth Maywald with United Way to do a lesson on buidling resiliency in Kelly Meaders’ child development classes. The kids played a game, “built” a child, and took notes about how various events that happen in a kids life can build resiliency. Mrs. Harris has also started her “Four Pillars of Resilience” program on the Rider campus. The 4 pillars: mental, phyiscal, social, and spiritual, have become a platform for CIS to use in successful enrichment programming in other CIS campuses. Way to go Mrs. Harris!

#Texoma Gives Traveling Hearts

As part of our participation in the #texomagives campaign, CIS has adopted the #texomagives traveling hearts. These hearts will journey with us up until the set giving day for Texoma Gives on September 7, 2017. This week they have been riding to work with our executive director, Toni Alonzo, during National Bike to Work Week. Follow along with us to see where all they go to help spread the word about the giving day! Where do you think they will go this summer?

National Bike to Work Week

National Bike to Work Week begins on May 15th and it continues through May 19th, which has also been deemed National Bike to Work Day. Our Executive Director, Toni Alonzo, is challenging herself to participate in National Bike to Work Week 2017. Toni’s participation in this event stems from her desire to help to raise health awareness as part of the CIS health and human services component. Her passion for biking has played hand in hand with this challenge as she has been an avid rider and participated in other biking events here in Wichita Falls. We started the week off right with a send off and following her through her trip to the office. The participation in Nation Bike to Work Week is the beginning of our Texoma Gives campaign 2017 as the #texomagives traveling hearts made the ride with her. For more information or to follow her journey through the week, please check out the CIS of Greater Wichita Falls Facebook page for updates!

Welcome to C.I.S. of Greater Wichita Falls Area!

Communities In Schools is the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization.

The mission of Communities In Schools is to champion the connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life.

By bringing caring adults into the schools to address children’s unmet needs, CIS provides the link between educators and the community. The result: teachers are free to teach, and students – many in jeopardy of dropping out – have the opportunity to focus on learning.

For over 30 years, Communities In Schools has worked to ensure that every child needs and deserves these “Five Basics”:

  • A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult
  • A safe place to learn and grow
  • A healthy start and a healthy future
  • A marketable skill to use upon graduation
  • A chance to give back to peers and community
